What does the duty of solidarity involve?

A knowledge question from the official lists (theme: Rights and duties), with its answer explained in English.

On exam day, in French

En quoi consiste le devoir de solidarité ?

  • AAider seulement les personnes de sa religion ou de son origineHelping only people of your own religion or origin
  • BLaisser seulement l'État aider les personnes en difficultéLetting only the State help people in difficulty
  • CAider les autres, par exemple porter secours à une personne en dangerHelping others, for example going to the aid of a person in dangerCorrect answer
  • DÊtre obligé d'aider une personne en danger, même si on risque sa vieBeing obliged to help a person in danger, even if you risk your life

Explanation

Fraternity is solidarity between citizens. The duty to help others is based on this value. For example, the law creates the obligation to assist a person in danger: everyone must go to the aid of others, if they can do so without putting their own life in peril (without risking their life). Failure to assist a person in danger is an offence punished by law.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • A. Helping only people of your own religion or origin — Republican fraternity is civic: it is not based on origin or religion.
  • B. Letting only the State help people in difficulty — The duty to help others concerns everyone: the legal obligation to assist a person in danger requires everyone to go to the aid of others.
  • D. Being obliged to help a person in danger, even if you risk your life — The legal obligation to assist a person in danger requires you to go to their aid only if you can do so without putting your own life in peril (without risking your life).
