French civic exam: practise in French, with explanations in English
The civic exam (examen civique) has 40 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes, in French only: you need 32 correct answers to pass. Practise on the same format, in French, and read every explanation in English, with the official source of each answer.
Who takes it
Since 2026, the civic exam is part of the application for a first multi-year residence card (carte de séjour pluriannuelle), a first resident card (carte de résident) and naturalisation. Each has its own official list of knowledge questions. Check your own case with your prefecture.
Why practise in French
On exam day, every question is in French. Here, the questions stay in French too, like on exam day. After each answer, the correction shows the English translation of the question, the explanation, why each wrong answer is wrong, and the French key words to remember.
How it works
- Free diagnostic: 20 questions, and your green light, your estimated chance of passing.
- Free mock exam: 40 questions in 45 minutes, with the same rules as on exam day.
- Full course, €19 once: unlimited mock exams from 593 checked questions, a mistakes notebook and spaced revision. No subscription.
The app itself is in French. Choose « English » in the language menu (the globe at the top) to see the explanations in English.
